LaGwana Zimmerman

LaGwana M. Zimmerman, affectionately known as “L” graced this world on July 28, 1954. Born in Pompano Beach, Florida to the late Samuel and Eula Mae George. Raised in Pompano Beach, she treasured her childhood and formative years in the vibrant city. LaGwana's educational journey commenced in the Broward County Public Schools, culminating in her proud graduation from Pompano High School in 1972. Continuing her educational quest, she pursued her studies at Broward Community College and later at Florida Atlantic University. In 1973, relocated to Fort Lauderdale, LaGwana embarked on a new chapter in her life when she met her soulmate, E. Bernard Zimmerman. The two would later enter holy matrimony on November 18, 1978, and from this union they were blessed with two adored children. Throughout her life, she skillfully managed the intricate balance of being a dedicated wife, a loving mother, and a committed professional. Her career with the Broward County Department of Human and Social Services spanned for over four decades, a testament to her unwavering commitment and dedication. This remarkable journey ultimately led to her well-earned and deserved retirement in February 2016. Whenever LaGwana entered a room, everyone would light up for that was the energy she would bring. She had many passions, finding immense joy in everything especially her frequent casino visits. It was the vibrant lights, the rhythmic sounds of the spinning slot machines, and the thrill of placing bets where moments of luck and fortune created an internal joy like no other for her. She was also most prideful of the precious moments spent with her cherished grandkids and fur babies. However, her true passion lay in caregiving, rather it was overseeing or tending to the needs of others is where her true gift shined. Her profound empathy, boundless compassion, endless patience, and unwavering attentiveness were God-given gifts she generously shared with those in need. At an early age, she found solace in her faith, accepting Christ at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Pompano Beach, Florida. On the morning of October 13, 2023, at 9:40 am, as the sun had just gently rose, God whispered, “Well done, my good and faithful servant,” calling her home to join her parents in eternal glory. She leaves behind to cherish her memory a loving husband, E. Bernard Zimmerman, a compassionate son, Zamir Zimmerman, and her devoted daughter, Zia Zimmerman. She is also survived by her sisters: Shujwana Fryer (Ron), Joan Shivers, and Deborah George, along with her brother, Samuel Todd George and his children, Morgan George and Samuel Oglesby; her sister-in-law, Jennifer Faye Zimmerman, and can’t forget about her grand pups, Bella and Rylo and a host of extended family and dear friends. LaGwana’s legacy continues through her grandsons, Zamari McKenley and Zakhi Simmons who she absolutely adored and considered the loves her life. LaGwana's spirit and the boundless love she shared with those fortunate enough to know her will forever be a cherished memory in our hearts.
