Homer Baker

Homer Baker was born on May 17, 1935, to the late Walter and Lizzie D. Baker in Macon, Georgia. He departed this life on November 22, 2023. He was the first of 12 children. The family moved to Pompano Beach, Florida when he was at a young age. He attended Blanche Ely High School where he played football and graduated in 1953. After graduation Homer met and married his High School sweetheart, Clementine McLemore and to that union was born a baby girl (Brenda Joyce). He joined the United States Army in the year of 1953 where he proudly served our country for two years in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Private First Class in 1955. After Homer returned from the military he lived in Pompano Beach, Florida. Shortly, thereafter, he separated from his marriage and moved to Ocean City, New Jersey. After settling in Ocean City, he met and married Ruby Davis and to that marriage were born four children; Barbara Denise, Charles, Homer Jr., and John and he raised Russell Davis as his own. Homer was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church under Rev. John T. Winters in Ocean City, New Jersey. He also was a member of the Ocean City Elks 757 where he served as Trustee. He later moved to membership to the Garden State Elks 1536 in Brothman, New Jersey where he served as House Chairman and Trustee. After many years of memorable moments together Ruby went home to be with the Lord. For the past 50 plus years, Homer and Ann (Battle) Baker built a wonderful life together. In that union he inherited a daughter, Audrey and a son Clyde. He moved to Somers Point, New Jersey where he settled in for good. He was well-known in the community; when neighbors and friends passed by, they would either honk their horn or call out to him as they approached the stop sign. His response was a big smile and a wave. This was a daily routine. His family called him the "Honorary mayor of Somers Point". Homer was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Pleasantville, New Jersey where he served in the host/hostess ministry. Homer was very sociable and enjoyed being around people. For many years he looked forward to attending the Annual Black & White Ball, which was an event that he enjoyed with family and friends. He also hosted many Super Bowl parties in his hotel room. He enjoyed attending the big screening in the casino ballroom. Homer was most proud of having gone on 27 "family and friends" cruises with his special friends, the McFarland’s. Also, he liked having fun at the horse track and frequenting the casinos. While visiting family in Florida he enjoyed checking out the dog track. He also enjoyed playing a game of spades, where he couldn't fool anyone fi he had a good hand. He would sit there with that big smile on his face. He enjoyed watching football and basketball, but he's Team Philly all the way.... The Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia 76ers. Christmas was a favorite holiday for him. Homer would have lights decorating the whole house. Family and friends visited the house throughout the day; that was a special time for him. Homer worked at Prudential Insurance Company in Linwood, New Jersey for many years. He was responsible for the overall operation of the kitchen. Upon leaving Prudential he continued to work as a chef in various well-known restaurants throughout Cape May and Atlantic counties. His “chef” services were called upon for family and friends' reunions, birthday and graduation parties and wedding showers, which he lovingly obliged. Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, Ann; two daughters, Brenda Joyce Baker, Barbara Denise Baker; three sons; Charles Baker and Homer Baker, Jr., John Baker; three stepchildren Audrey Battle, Clyde (Lois) Battle and Russell (Morrosa) Davis; one brother, Roosevelt (Sherri) Baker; three sisters;(Leola) Lavern Taylor, Carrie Baker and Viola (Carl) Rouse and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was proceeded in death by his parent, Walter Baker, Sr. and Lizzie Baker, four brothers: Walter Baker, Jr., Charles Baker, Claude Baker and Abraham Baker; three sisters: Maggie Baker, Nettie Baker and Rosemary Baker.
