Abraham Burgess

Mr. Abraham Burgess, son of the late Alonzo and Ollie Burgess was born December 10, 1939 in Lake City, South Carolina. He was baptized at an early age at St. John United Methodist Church in Lake City. At the tender age of 16, he moved to South Miami, Florida to live with his sister Ruth. Soon after Abraham and brother Samuel became roommates and attended trade school together. Both Abraham and Samuel would later both start their own construction companies. Abraham later teamed up with another brother, James Paul Burgess Sr. to start A & J Construction Company where they specialized in underground piping. Abraham met and married Cora Ford and settled in Pompano Beach. Their union produced three children, Willie James Burgess, Rachel Burgess Taylor and Sandy Lee Burgess, all whom have gone home to be with the Lord. Abraham was also father to Cora’s children, Rex and Joseph Ford, Jimmy Lee and Linda Sutton. After separating from Cora, Abraham met Brenda’s mother and a daughter Brenda Burgess was born. In 1979 Abraham met and married Margaret Edwards and moved to Delray Beach. Their union produced two children, Solomon Alonzo Burgess and Phylecia Burgess in addition to Judith Thomas and Brendella Forbes. The family were active members of Sutton Chapel C.O.G.I.C., where Abraham was Chairman of the Deacon’s Board, a member of the men’s choir, and finance committee. He played an instrumental part in the purchase of the property and constructing a larger building at the current site of Sutton Chapel. Abraham worked tirelessly building his construction business until he retired. Abraham Burgess was a hard worker, excellent singer, world class cook, loving father and a great provider. The greatest of this God-fearing man’s accomplishments, was that he loved the Lord and loved his children! Abraham is survived by sons Solomon Burgess (Pediedra), Rex and Joseph Ford and Jimmy Lee Sutton; daughters Brenda and Phylecia Burgess, Judith (Andre) Thomas, Brendella Forbes and Linda Sutton; brother Samuel Burgess; sisters Katherine Inmon and Janie Mae McFadden; grandchildren, Selena Taylor, Trina Taylor, Terrance Kelly and Tatiana Johnson; great-grandchild Anaya Lovett; nieces Julia May Stidham, Andrea King, Tanisha Burgess-Lee, Judy Ferguson, Psaunti Tucker, Sandra Allen, Cindalisa Burgess; nephews Johnny Alonzo Burgess, Lonzie Alonzo Burgess, Bonzie Burgess, Turik Bur- gess, Samuel Burgess Jr., James Burgess, James Burgess II, James Burgess III, Sedrick Burgess, Larry Johnson and Leviticus Johnson. Mr. Abraham Burgess is preceded in death by his parents Alonzo and Ollie Burgess; son Willie James Burgess; two daughters Rachel Burgess Taylor and Sandy Lee Burgess; brothers Henry Burgess, Wilbert Burgess, Johnny Burgess, James Paul Burgess Sr.; sisters Loretta Goodman, Ruth Dupree Brogdon and Mrs. Harriet Washington.
