Her Life Story Sonya Francine McNeil, RN was born on December 17, 1959 in Beckley, West Virginia to Frances Walker Brown and the late James Phillip Stewart. She departed this life to be with the Lord, on January 15, 2021. At the age of 10 years, Sonya’s family relocated to Jamaica, Queens, NY where she was reared and educated in the Queens County Public School system. She graduated from August Marta High School in 1978. Sonya had a servant heart. Her love and commitment of helping those in need led her to continue her education at the Middlesex County Vocational & Technical High School in East Brunswick, NJ earning a Certificate of Practical Nursing (PN) in 1999. She used these skills as she was employed at the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ until relocating to Pompano Beach, Florida in the year 2000. Sonya continued her studies of health education at the Broward County Community College in Fort Lauderdale, receiving a certificate as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in 2004, Clinical Ladder LPN II in 2005, and then proudly earning her Associates of Science in Nursing Degree as a Registered Nurse in 2007. Sonya was employed in the Broward County Medical System for many years. In 2010 she became employed at the Hollywood Memorial Regional Hospital serving as a RN and charge nurse. Sonya took great pride in her work as an RN. She was very conscientious in serving her patients with dignity, respect, and true compassion. Sonya received the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior and stood firm on His word. She trusted in Him to see her through all trials and tribulations. In 2000, Sonya became a member of the New Mount Olive Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale. Sonya had a real zest for life as shown in her many hobbies. She was an avid reader, writer, and collector of books and fine art. Sonya enjoyed music, theater, and performance art. She loved to travel, whether going to Dubai, Jamaica, or Hawaii. Sonya loved the outdoors. On any day you could find her walking on the beach, biking, white water rafting, snorkeling, or dancing. She had a taste for fine dining and would not hesitate to take you to different eating establishments, very often paying for your meals. However, Sonya’s most treasured pastimes were taking care of her beloved pets, She’Ra and Mr. Cuddles. Sonya married the love of her life, Wilbur, while residing in New Jersey and on August 6th celebrated 24 years of marriage. She adored her son, Rahmel, grandchildren and great-granddaughter who were and will always remain eternally embraced by the warmth of her spirit. They were the lights of her life to whom she showed infinite love, compassion, patience, friendship, unconditional dedication and unwavering commitment. Wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, there was nothing that Sonya would not do for those who were her family and friends. If you were privileged in becoming a friend of Sonya’s, you were a true friend for life. Her family became your family, Sonya leaves to cherish her memory her husband and life partner, Wilbur Craig; her beloved mother, Frances W. Brown; son, Rahmel Jefferies (Christine); brother, Frank Walker (Jane); sister, Regina Walker; grańdchildren, Isis, Jahtee, and Shaprae ́ Jeffries; great-granddaughter, Aze ́lynn; niece, Deja Grant; nephew, Ethan Walker; god-son, Jalil Heathcoat; the Pemberton and McNeil clan; special and close friend, Fatima Robinson, and a host of relatives, very close friends, and coworkers who love and will miss her dearly. “A Limb has fallen from the family tree that says grieve not for me, remember the best times, the laughter, the song, the good life I lived while I was strong.”
