We come together today to celebrate the life of Alfred Ernest Thurston. Alfred was born on February 19, 1930 in Pompano Beach, Florida. He was the 2nd oldest child born to the late Rosa Mae and James Thurston. Alfred peacefully passed away in his home surrounded by loved ones at the age of 90. He was educated in the Broward County School System graduating from Dillard High School class of “1949”. Upon graduating from high school, he received his bachelor’s degree in Biology and Chemistry from A&T College of North Carolina, in Greensboro, North Carolina. In 1958 he began teaching at Blanche Ely High School and various other schools until returning to Blanche Ely High School where he retired in 1992. He was a faithful member of Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a chairman of the Deacon Board, finance committee, and the food pantry. Alfred and Juanita J. Miller were joined in holy matrimony for over sixty-five years. To this union three sons and two daughters were born. He was pre-deceased by one son, Alfred L. (Cherise) Thurston. He is survived by Johnathan (Sunae) Sworn, Kirby Thurston, Connie Thurston, and Valerie (Jeffrey) Thurston-Smith. With thirteen siblings, he was pre-deceased by Percy (Queen) Thurston, Theodus (Pearl) Thurston, Perry (Vernerva) Thurston Sr., James (Maebell) Thurston II, and Leona Sumpter. He leaves to mourn surviving siblings Rosetta (Leon deceased) Branch, Henry (Muriel) Thurston Sr., Margaret (Billy deceased) Ricks, Joyce Mcgirt, Darlene Thurston, Larry (Josephine) Thurston, Kenneth (Victoria) Thurston, Eight grandchildren: Sheena, Crystal, Justin, Chanel, Antoine, Jasmine, Jeffrey (Kayla), Edgar; nine great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousin and other sorrowing family and friends.
