Villis Sworn Higgs

Obituary Villis Jumurette Sworn Higgs was born January 7, 1944 in the city of Pompano Beach, Florida. She was the beloved daughter of Perry and Mae E Sworn, both of whom preceded her in death. She received her early education in the city of Pompano, attending Coleman Elementary and was a proud graduate and alumni of Blanche Ely High School Class of 1961. She continued her education attending Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. On April 6, 1969, Villis married her high school sweetheart Ronald Benjamin Higgs. Together they shared 53 years of marriage and raised a beloved daughter Nicole Nichele Higgs. The family relocated from Pompano Beach to Lauderdale Lakes, Florida in 1977. Villis accepted Christ at an early age. She was a lifetime member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Pompano Beach, Florida. There she served for many years as a musician for the Church School and various choirs, Church School Teacher, and Vacation Bible School Facilitator. Villis began her professional career as an educator in Perry Georgia. After 2 years she returned to South Florida and continued in the field, working for Broward County Public Schools as an elementary school teacher until she retired. During that time, she also served as the Vice President of the Florida Branch National Education Association. She also served her community as founding Vice President of Women In Action Inc. Villis loved her entire family. She took pleasure in keeping relationships both in the states and the islands vital. Her wisdom, kindness and inspiration was known to all who knew her. Early Thursday morning, November 24th, Villis an- swered the Master’s call and taking her Lord and Savior’s hand, joined that great cloud of witnesses, where she continues to cheer us on. She leaves to mourn her death and celebrate her life her loving husband, Ronald B Higgs,(Lauderdale Lakes, FL); beloved daughter Dr. Nicole Nichele Higgs, MD (Tamarac, FL); brother Rubin Zimbalis Smith (Susan) (Pompano Beach, FL); aunt Milicent Sworn (Pompano Beach, FL); brother-in- laws Cecil Higgs (Huette) Sugar Land, TX; Dwight Higgs (Eileen) (Pompano Beach, FL); sister-in-law Carolyn Higgs (Plantation, FL); beloved nieces Kiara (Sophia) and Tiffany Smith, and a host of other sorrowing nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
