Susan Bacon McCray

Mrs. Susan Diana Bacon McCray was born November 3, 1947 to the late Samuel and America Bacon in Babson Park, Florida. Her educational background was nurtured at Roosevelt High School, then blossomed at Bethune Cookman, expanded at Florida State University, then had its final maturation at Nova Southeastern University. After a loving courtship a bond of true love birth an unbreakable marriage to her soulmate, Elijah McCray in 1971. Susan and Elijah never forgot their hometown roots, but this new union gave them the courage to start an excit- ing chapter of life together in Pompano Beach Florida. Susan had a 42 year career of service in the field of education. Teaching children music was much more than a job it was her passion. She taught one year at Carver Elementary (Lake Placid) and 41 years of teaching at both Crys- tal Lake Middle School and Deerfield Beach High School. Her love of music allowed her to travel the country, be- come a well-respected judge in the music profession, and have an entire music department named in her honor. In 1968 Susan joined Alpha Kappa Alpha on the campus of Bethune – Cookman College through the Gamma Tau Chapter. Susan was a charter member and has served as the 14th President, Vice President, Treasurer, Budget Committee Chairman, Program Chairman, Connections Chairman and Standards Chairman inside of the Kappa Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Susan was selected Soror of the Year in 2007 and has won sever- al South Atlantic Region and Cluster l Awards, including the Mary Shy Scott Fine Arts Award and Carolyn Young Golden Soror Award. In 2018 her crowning moment was experienced; she was honored as a Golden Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Heaven has gained an elegant music conductor dressed beautifully in Pink and Green! Susan was preceded in death by both her parents Samuel and America Bacon, siblings Hattie, Ellen, Leon, and Samuel Jr., both in-laws David and Ceola McCray, brothers’ in-laws News, David Jr., Sylvester, Willie, and Doug- las. So Susan will be well received into the heavenly choir. Sing Angels Sing!!! Susan leaves to cherish her joyful memory a loving husband Elijah McCray, brothers’ and sisters’ in-laws, Elisha McCray (Valerie) of Jacksonville, FL, Lewis McCray (Bertha) of Fort Pierce, FL., Ann Freeman of Jacksonville, FL., Moses McCray of Lake Placid, FL., Johnny McCray of Lake Placid, FL., Sherry Sinclair of Jacksonville, FL., Lorene McCray of Lake Placid, FL, and Maggie McCray of Georgia. She also leaves two stepsons Kaz Adderly and Teraz MCray(Ashley), grandchildren Teraz Jr., Kaz Jr., Michelle, Vana, Kamari, Kasey, and Aria Mccray a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, Godchildren, sorors and friends.
