Ronald Higgs

Ronald Benjamin Higgs was born September 18, 1944 in the city of Pompano Beach, Florida to the parents of Thurstia Grooms Higgs and Cecil Fred Higgs, both of whom preceded him in death. He along with his 4 siblings, one of whom Joyce Thurstia Higgs, preceded him death, grew up attending school in the city. Ronald attended Pompano Project School, and Blanche Ely High School graduating in the class of 1961. After which, he attended Paul Quinn College graduating in 1964. After graduating Ronald began his career in law enforcement by joining the police force in Washington D.C. After one year he relocated back to the city of Pompano Beach and joined Broward Sheriff’s Office. He also attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) training in Quantico, Virginia. He proudly served as an BSO Officer for 32 years and was the first African American to head BSO’s Internal Affairs Division. He retired in the rank of Major in 1998 after 32 years. On April 6, 1969, Ronald married his high school sweetheart Villis Jumurette Sworn who preceded him in death. Together they shared 53 years of marriage raising a beloved daughter Nicole Nichele Higgs. The family relocated from Pompano Beach to Lauderdale Lakes, Florida in 1977. Ronald was well loved by family and friends and all who knew him. He was often the “go to” for wisdom and Godly council. He took pleasure in keeping relationships both in the states and the islands vital. Late on the evening of August 27, 2023 Ronald answered the Master’s call joining his beloved Villis in that great clouds of witnesses. He leaves to mourn his death and celebrate his life one beloved daughter, Dr. Nicole Nichele Higgs (Tamarac, FL); two brothers, Cecil Fred Higgs (Huette) (Houston, TX); Dwight Higgs ((Eileen) (Pompano Beach, FL); one sister Carolyn Higgs (Plantation, FL); devoted brother-in-law Rubin Z. Smith (Susan) (Pompano Beach, FL); Goddaugher Kia Moore Jackson (Barry)(Fort Lauderdale, FL); beloved nieces and nephews Kiara Smith (Sophia) and Tiffany Smith (Pompano Beach,Fl); Evette Higgs Wilson (Maurice) (Arlington, TX); Cecil Fred Higgs III (Terese) (Houston, TX); Cedric Higgs (Dallas, TX); Timothy Higgs (Pia) (New York, NY); Mahrtina Higgs Aybar (Plantation, FL); Liahna Higgs (North Carolina); and a host of other loving family and friends.
