Robert John Shelley

Robert “Bob” John Shelley Robert J. Shelley, fondly known as Bob, a dedicated public servant and respected leader, passed away on May 24, 2023, in Pompano Beach, Florida, at the age of 81. He was born on July 27, 1941, in New York, New York. Bob made a lasting impact in his community through his various roles in politics, firefighting, and community service. In 1969, Bob relocated to Florida and quickly became an integral part of the Pompano Beach community. He pursued his education at Broward Community College, acquiring the knowledge that would serve as a foundation for his future endeavors. Throughout his life, Bob exhibited a deep commitment to his family, and he was happily married to his beloved wife, Patricia. Together, they raised five children: Theresa, Michael, John, Donna, and Kenneth. Bob's leadership and service were also recognized through his love for his country. Prior to his illustrious career, Bob served in the United States Army from 1959 to 1962, dedicating himself to his country and embodying the values of honor and duty. Bob's career as a firefighter was marked by exceptional dedication and unwavering bravery. He served as the Division Fire Chief and Fire Marshal in Pompano Beach, exemplifying his commitment to protecting and serving his community. During his tenure, he became a respected figure within the Pompano Beach Professional Fire Fighters union, where he served as President from 1973 to 1979. Bob's leadership extended to a broader scope as he assumed the role of District Vice President for the Professional Fire Fighters of Florida union from 1978 to 1981. His tireless efforts to improve working conditions and advocate for the rights of firefighters left an indelible mark on the firefighting community in Florida. In addition to his firefighting career, Bob was actively involved in the political landscape of Pompano Beach. He held the position of President in the Pompano Beach Republican Club from 1981 to 1982, demonstrating his passion for conservative values and his commitment to fostering political engagement within his community. Bob's dedication to public service extended beyond his immediate affiliations. He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1982 and served until 1990, where he served on numerous committees and helped pass legislation that is still in effect today. He later served in the Pompano Beach City Commission until 2002. He was also an active member of the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). He played a major role in the beautification of Pompano Beach project which is still in effect today. In his golden years, he was happily retired and spent his days spending time with his grandchildren. He spent his time teaching them to swim, drive and attending any activities in which they were involved. They were truly his greatest joys. A man of faith, Bob was a member of River of Life Church in Coral Springs. He believed in the power of faith to bring people together and provide comfort during challenging times. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Catherine Dwyer Shelley, his siblings William (Bill) Shelley, his wife Ann, Eugene (Bud) Shelley, his wife Grace, and Noreen Shelley Jaconetti. He is also preceded by his sons Michael Vincent, and John Patrick. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia, his children Theresa Shelley Knorr (Thomas), Donna Shelley Robb (David), and Kenneth Shelley. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild , as well as numerous extended family members and friends. His presence will be deeply missed, but he will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, steadfast leadership, and immense love for his family and community. He leaves behind a legacy of service and selflessness that will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.
