Robert Holmes

Robert Willie Holmes was born March 15, 1936, in Washington, DC. He was the third of three siblings born to Ernest "Buddy" Holmes and Minnie Lee Hammond Holmes. His older brother, Roosevelt and sister, Essie preceded him in death. He departed this life on August 3, 2026. At the age of four, his parents moved back to North Augusta, South Carolina where Robert was reared. He received his elementary education at Central Elementary, North Augusta, South Carolina. Robert graduated from Martha Schofield High School, Aiken, South Carolina in 1954. He then enrolled at Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia where he received his B.A. with a major in French and Mathematics in 1958. Later he earned his Master's degree in administration and supervision from Barry University, Miami Shores, Florida. Robert was a career educator with Broward County Public Schools for 34 years. He taught Mathematics at Blanche Ely High School, Wingate/Everglades, Lauderdale Lakes and Pompano Beach Middle Schools. From 1980 to 1982 Robert served as a curriculum planner for Essa Magnet Schools. Robert retired in 1992 after serving eight years as an assistant principal at McNicol Middle School in Hollywood, Florida. In 1960, Robert married Marian Randolph. This union was blessed with two sons. He joined Mount Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Samuel Collier. While there, he served as a Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent, Trustee, Ordained Deacon and Minister of Finance. In 1989, he left Mount Calvary and served as an organizing member and deacon of New Creation Baptist Church of Christ under the leadership of Reverend Otis L. Sample, Jr. Robert served New Creation well as a deacon and a member of the finance committee until God called him home. Robert's philosophy of life appears to have been molded form the teachings of the late Dr. Benjamin E. Mays who said, "Morehouse Men make their living by what they earn, but they make their lives by what they give others." As a result of this philosophy, his community involvements were quite extensive. At the education level, they include service on the School Board's Ethnic Relations Committee, Desegregation Guidelines Committee, Middle School Report Card Committee, Vice President Broward County Classroom Teachers Association (CTA) and a member of the CTA Contract Negotiations Team. He was equally involved in the Pompano Beach local community. He served as Vice Chairman of Pompano Beach Community Relations Committee, Alternate Member of the Zoning Board of Appeals Committee, Chairman of Budget Review Committee, Treasurer and Board Member of Unity in The Community of Pompano Beach, organizing President of Sanders Park Civic Association and Mathematics Consultant for North Broward County Links, Inc SAT/PSAT Tutorial Program for well over 15 years. Robert was also the organizing president of Morehouse College Alumni Chapter of Broward County, Inc in 1966. He was a life member of Morehouse College National Alumni Association and a Member of Morehouse National Alumni Association Board of Directors as Vice President of Region II from 1984 to 2004. As a result of his involvement throughout Broward County, The Broward County Historical Society named Robert a Broward County Pioneer on October 20, 2012. Robert leaves to cherish his memories: Two sons, Darrell (Sherry) Holmes, of Clermont, Florida and Danny (Princess) Holmes, of Parkland, Florida: two grandsons: Henri (Toccara) Holmes, of Sunrise, Florida and Hamilton Holmes, of Parkland Florida, a granddaughter, Dayna Moore, three great grands: Jayda Holmes, Rayvyn and Jordan Holmes, all of Sunrise, Florida; a niece; Beverly (Johnny) Irvin, Augusta, Georgia, a nephew, Donald (Charlotte) Patterson, North Augusta, South Carolina, cousins, other relatives, friends, two God daughters and one God son.
