Bernice Braggs

A Time to be born…. Bernice Elizabeth Braggs was born on May 7, 1935, in Reidsville, North Carolina to John Richard Howard and Catherine Simpson-Howard. She spent her early years in Reidsville, North Carolina, and Asbury Park, New Jersey. A Time for Family…… In the summer of 1953, she met the love of her life Earnest Braggs, Sr., in Asbury Park, New Jersey. They were united in marriage on September 6, 1953. God blessed their union with four beautiful children. They later moved to Pompano Beach, Florida in 1956. She was a devoted wife and loving mother to their children: Anthony Bernard Braggs, Sr., Phyllis Braggs Hamilton, Karen Braggs McCall, and Earnest Braggs, Jr. A Time to Serve…. Bernice Braggs gave her life to Jesus Christ sometime after 1956, where she baptized at 16th Avenue Church of Christ in Pompano Beach, Florida. She also served as a member of the 15th Street Church of Christ in Pompano Beach, Florida where she served as a Sunday School teacher, assisted with the Youth Director activities, and was a member of the Benevolence Committee. She later moved her membership the Deerfield Beach Church of Christ where she labored until her untimely passing. Throught the years she has actively been a part of various committees, workshops and leadership conferences. She had beautiful smile, and a great sense of humor, that would keep you laughing. She loved to travel, visit the sick, and help others in their time of need. Her love of church and family went way beyond her own family, nurturing many children as her own where she was often considered as a second mother. A Time for Work… Bernice began doing domestic housework upon her moving to Pompano Beach. In the mid-sixties she opened, directed, and operated the Sander Park Nursery and Daycare Center where she cared for and nurtured many of her church members and the surrounding communities’ children. She worked for Bendix Avionics from January 1972 until April 1993, retiring after 21 years of service. Bernice enjoyed baking so much that she started her own home business, to which she named Bernie’s Baked Goods. Bernie’s Baked Goods starred her famous red velvet cake where customers came from Dade and Palm Beach counties to buy them-her cakes were oh so good. A Time to Mourn…. Bernice E. Braggs transitioned from this earthly life on February 27, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents: John Richard Howard and Catherine Simpson-Howard, Husband: Earnest Braggs, Sr., sister: Margaret Howard Stokes, brothers: Early Howard and Willie Morris Howard. She leaves to cherish her legacy and memories, daughters: Karen Braggs-McCall (Billy) of Coconut Creek, Florida and Phyllis Braggs Hamilton of Apopka, Florida, sons: Anthony Bernard Braggs, Sr. (Carol) of Acworth, Georgia and Earnest Braggs, Sr. (Phillis) of Lauderhill, Florida, sister-in-law: Daisy Johnson of Pompano Beach, Florida special niece: Velma Gurnell of Indianapolis, Indiana. Grandchildren: Anthony Braggs, Jr., Antoinette Liddell, Antwan Braggs, Sheresa Braggs, Ernest Hamilton III, Billy McCall, Jr., Kimeisha Braggs, Earnest Braggs Iii, Pricilla Braggs, 29 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends who loved her dearly.
